In the sense that they are big novels that try to put everything in it, like a book of everything, with long digressions and weird subplots and little to no resolution, but a whole lot of food for thought? This is one of those big novels. Instead, he navigates his way around the debauchery, teasing it but never showing it, while focusing primarely in the philosophical debate about it. Aline et Valcour has as its subtitle "Le Roman Philosophique" philosophical novel and Sade is very on the nose about it. The plot is minimal, a sentimental piece typical of the time, with two sets of characters facing up: ones for virtue, the others for vice. Sade twistes the sentimental plot to make it a satire of the epistolar novels of the time, mocking the virtuous characters, but never fully choosing a side. The main plot of Aline and Valcour as star-crossed lovers makes for only half the book; the real heart of the novel is the story within it, of Leonore and Sainville, a mirror of our titular characters, thrown into the world in a weird quest which include pirates, the Spanish Inquisition and African kingdoms.
