Schumpeter subscribed to this general viewpoint, which he considered ideologically neutral, as a working hypothesis for his own theory of social evolution. Fifty years before Freud, this was a performance of the first order. They were too closely linked to the innermost meaning of his message, too deeply rooted in the very meaning of his life, to be ever discarded.
Moreover, they were what appealed to followers and what called forth their fervent allegiance […] And so we behold in this case the victory of ideology over analysis: all the consequences of a vision that turns into a social creed and thereby renders analysis sterile. We may instead regard the typical innovator as the tool of the social relations in which he is enmeshed and which force him to innovate on pain of elimination. This approach implies a different view of profits and accumulation from that of Professor Schumpeter.
For him profits result from the innovating process, and hence accumulation is a derivative phenomenon. The alternative view maintains that profits exist in a society with capitalist class-structure even in the absence of innovation. Dans un article sur les deux penseurs, O. Instead he implemented his own economic interpretation far more broadly, flexibly, and subtly, in a variety of ways for different problems, societies and periods.
Schumpeter defines aptitudes in terms of qualities such as the general level of intelligence, capacity for intellectual analysis, willpower, resoluteness, ability to command obedience. This means that specific talents such as those of opera singers do not play any part in his theory of classes. He is interested in qualities that make for social leadership, a central idea in his schema. To do so would be incompatible with his refusal to blame or hold capitalists responsible for their actions.
The origins of capitalism in the shape of capitalist enterprise can be traced back to the classical world, in fact further back to Hammurabi, if you like […] By many of the phenomena that we associate with modern capitalism had made their appearance. The economy continued to develop on capitalist lines, but the political frame of society remained stubbornly aristocratic. Schumpeter has little patience with this, but there is strong textual evidence. Marx offers the analogy of a house, which shrinks if a palace springs up beside it: in the same way, the enjoyments of a worker may rise, but their social satisfaction, their satisfaction relative to what a capitalist can enjoy, may fall if there is a rapid growth in productive capital […] Given the accumulation of fortunes among the capitalist class as defined, it may well be that the gap between them and members of the working class as defined has indeed widened.
In other words: Steps between which there is no strictly continuous path. He did not, however, place any importance on the withering away of economic leadership as a cause of the eventual downfall of capitalism. The similarities in their work were not coincidental, but were instead the outcome of cross-fertilization of their own ideas with insights drawn from Marx, Hilferding and Tugan-Baranowsky.
