La explicacin a este efecto es la siguiente: Cuando el oxgeno se combina con la hemoglobina a nivel alveolar, hace que sta se vuelva mucho ms cida. Esto, a su vez, expulsa CO2 hacia el alvolo por dos mecanismos: el primero se debe a la prdida de afinidad de la hemoglobina por el CO2 cuando la primera se torna cida. El segundo, es producido porque la acidez aumentada de la hemoglobina hace que sta libere un exceso de iones hidrgeno, que a su vez se fijan con iones bicarbonato para formar cido carbnico; a continuacin, ste se disocia en agua y dixido de carbono, y ste ltimo se libera desde la sangre hacia los alvolos. Finalmente, los mecanismos que hacen que el CO2 salga hacia los alvolos, se invierten a nivel tisular, cuando la hemoglobina est desoxigenada y tiende a ser menos cida. En la periferia, y por efecto de la difusin de oxgeno hacia los tejidos, la hemoglobina se vuelve mucho ms vida por el CO2 aumentando el transporte de este gas desde los te jidos hacia el alvolo.
